Bowling Green Memories...

Rich Miller

The first race at Bowling Green was won by Phil Mummert, and I came in 2nd. That was in 1952.

The second race at Bowling Green was probably my most memorable one.  My Dad's brother had died and was being viewed and buried that Sunday afternoon.  At my dad's persistence, I had to attend.  As soon as permissible, my brother, Larry and I left the funeral parlor in Fawn Grove and headed towards Bowling Green with my brother driving and me changing clothes in the back seat of the car.

The car was at the race track, scheduled to be in the third heat and to be driven by Bud Bradfield if I did not get there in time.  The third heat had been stopped due to an accident, at which time I took over the driving.   I won the heat but was disqualified for changing drivers. So, I asked Clyde Bolen if I could run the consolation, which he okayed and I proceeded to win, qualifying for the main event.  I then won the feature race that day.

On opening day in 1953, I won the feature followed by Jimmy Smith of Wrightsville, Bud  Folkenroth and Mike Wilhelm.  Memories of Bowling Green are special, as we were pretty much local boys, with our families and friends there to root for us.  And, along the way, many new friendships were formed.
