Bowling Green Memories...

Leroy Rosenzweig

I was 16 years old when I saw my first race at Bowling Green.  The added attraction was a parachute jump.

My brother, Ken, started racing at Bowling Green in 1953.  I took my Mom and Dad for one time only, because Ken got into a bad accident that day.  He did not get hurt, but my Mom and Dad had to see Ken's car #93 high enough in the air that Gene Goodling #3 was able to drive his car underneath him.  When the cars stopped and Ken came down, his front end was on the bank on the back stretch, and the rear of the car was on the top of the other side of that bank in the woods. Ken went on to drive at other tracks such as Williams Grove and Reading.

I started driving at Bowling Green in 1954, in a 1936 Dodge #68, in the novice class for beginners. I had a hard time keeping the wheels on the car.  There were usually 30 or more cars in the race.  One day I and other cars came out of the 4th turn side by side, and there was a stalled car sitting on the infield bank.  The car on my right side tried to force me into the back of the parked car.  I got lucky and missed it.  I followed the black Ford and on the next lap at the 3rd turn, I got under him and forced him through the fence and went on my merry way.  I'm not sure if he hit the fence.

There was only one bad spot on the track and that was between the first and second turns. If you got too high, you were bound to go airborne.  The track was leveled off up there.

I didn't know many of the drivers in my class, but, I do remember Clair Stock who drove a Chrysler and who won several races.
