Bowling Green Memories...

A STROKE OF GOOD LUCK
by Chris Miller

Back in the early years of racing at Bowling Green, there were all kinds of bizarre and crazy things going on. One of those events, witnessed by everyone in the grandstand, turned out to be quite a lucky break for Bradley Myers.

Brad was a crew member on Car #82, which was driven every other week by George Kessler and Mose Baker. The crew included Brad, Bob Gladfelter, George and Mose, all good mechanics. They all worked at Weist Motor out in West York across from the Gladfelter Gulf station, where they kept the car. The car was a '37 or '38 Plymouth Coupe painted orange and blue, Gulf colors.

Brad was a very young man at the time this hair-raising event occurred. He was standing in the Bowling Green infield with his rags, wrenches and flashlight in his pockets, at the ready, looking professional and watching #82 in the feature race.

Brad was so focused on watching #82 go around the track that he never saw what was coming. Another car coming off the 4th turn upset and started rolling up into the infield. Those who saw it, scattered like ants but there stood Brad. The car hit Brad, knocked him down, rolled completely over him and kept going. Brad jumped up and started running. A couple of guys caught him and the first aid crew rushed over to check on him. No bumps, cuts or marks anywhere on his body.

Of course, after that he took a lot of kidding about what happened. He may not have had a scratch on him, but I always wondered if anybody checked his pants !!!
